Rosenzweig Residence

Master Planning and Historic Renovation

This 1860s multi-unit row house is located in the exclusive Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago, one block from Lake Michigan. The four-story building had been converted to a boarding house and many of the original finishes were covered over, removed or compromised. The stairway that connected the upper levels had also been removed. Tenants have to access the apartments on the upper floors through the adjacent building.

This project (which remains un-realized) returns this historic residence to its formal glory and reclaims it as a single family home. The lower level and main floor are developed from the master plan. The main floor has a restored grand wood staircase, formal dining room and new kitchen. The lower level, designed for entertainment, includes a media room, hot tub and sauna. Restoration of the historic brown stone façade includes replacing the windows to reflect the original period.
